Germany, Japan pressure China on currency

Officials from both Germany and Japan called on China to take measures to prevent a currency war, the Wall Street Journal reported. "We have to take care that the currency doesn’t become a trade war," said German Economy Minister Rainer Bruederle. "China bears a lot of responsibility for ensuring that it doesn’t come to an escalation." His comments were echoed by Japan’s Prime Minister Naoto Kan, who called on China and South Korea to "act responsibly with common rules" on exchange rates. Both comments were widely viewed as unusually strong statements which set the tone ahead of the upcoming G20 summit in Seoul. China has come under increasing fire from Europe, Japan and the United States for its reluctance to allow the renminbi to rise, though other countries such as Australia, Brazil, Japan and Thailand have also taken limited measures to drive down their rising currencies.
