Google awaits China license approval decision

Google’s (GOOG.NASDAQ) application to renew its internet content provider (ICP) license in China is being reviewed by the government but it may take some time before any decision is announced, state media reported. "We are still examining their application," said Wang Lijian, spokesman for the Ministry of Industrial and Information Technology. Wang said Google submitted its application "quite late" and this means the ministry will need more time to decide whether to approve or deny the search engine’s ICP license application. Google recently provided links to music, translation and shopping services on its China homepage having earlier announced that it would stop redirecting mainland internet users to its Hong Kong site. Google China spokesperson Marsha Wang said the update on the China homepage did not mean its application to renew its ICP license had been successful. "We are still waiting to hear from the government," Wang said.
