Google objects to Acer phone

Google (GOOG.NASDAQ) objected to Taiwan computer maker Acer’s (2353.TPE) production of a smartphone that runs on a system developed by Chinese online retailer group Alibaba Group Holding, The Wall Street Journal reported. The phone uses the Alibaba-designed Aliyun mobile operating system, which Google calls a “non-compatible Android device,” essentially accusing Alibaba of slightly modifying Google’s original operating system. On Thursday, Acer canceled a launch event for the phone that would have marked the start of sales in China. A new release date has not been set. Acer had “committed to building one Android platform and to not ship non-compatible Android devices,” Google contended in a statement. “Aliyun OS is not part of the Android ecosystem so of course Aliyun OS is not and does not have to be compatible with Android,” John Spelich, Alibaba’s vice president of international corporate affairs, said.
