Google (GOOG.NASDAQ) has announced plans to stop automatically redirecting internet users in China to its uncensored site in Hong Kong, after the Chinese government objected to its strategy and threatened the company with the loss of its license, the Wall Street Journal reported. Google said in a blog post on Monday that it had resubmitted its license application, which will be up for renewal as of Wednesday. The blog post also stated that the Chinese government told Google that redirecting users of its mainland address google.cn to the Hong Kong-based site google.com.hk, is "unacceptable". Though the automatic redirect will be stopped, visitors to google.cn will now be presented with a message in Chinese that says, "We have moved to google.com.hk", which users can click to get to the unfiltered Hong Kong search engine. Google’s latest move comes three months after the internet search giant said it would stop adhering to China’s requirements of censoring search results, which it had followed since google.cn launched in 2006.
