Government meeting will determine economic policy

A government meeting on economic policy that began on Saturday should wrap up today, state media reported. The meeting will lay the groundwork for the next five years of economic policy beginning in 2010. No official details of the conference have been released, but observers believe the issues on the agenda include boosting domestic consumption and increasing economic growth. The Chinese economy grew 8.9% year-on-year in the third quarter and analysts believe full-year growth will be more than 8%. Observers hold that the government must increase household income, continue to work on healthcare reform and improve the quality of education to ensure sustainable economic growth while monetary policy based on the stimulus package should be adjusted to reduce overcapacity and prevent a bubble in the property sector.
