The global competitiveness of Chinese companies is still at a "relatively low level" and needs a concerted push by government and enterprises to improve the situation, a leading official has said. Vice-Minister of Commerce Ma Xiuhong told delegates at a trade and investment fair in Xiamen that Chinese companies still lacked innovation, brands and sales networks. Compounding the problem was the high number of uncompetitive SMEs, he said, many of them operating with outdated technology. Ma said the Ministry of Commerce would set up a new system to measure Chinese industrial competitiveness and redouble efforts under the government's "go global" drive.
