Work is due to start next month on creating an advanced Global Positioning System for Guangdong province. Ten ground-receiving stations and a central control headquarters are to be built in the first phase, with more than Yn30m earmarked for construction. Guangdong will become the first province in China to have GPS when the network is completed in 2005.
The network is expected to improve weather forecasting and help vehicles fitted with GPS technology to negotiate traffic problems. GPS will also be used in mobile phones to improve telecoms services.
