The Beijing-based Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs released data calling out more than 200 publicly listed firms for excessive pollution, South China Morning Post reported. Data collected by the group indicates that 1,069 firms it examined had environmental violations on record, including 34 out of the 36 listed iron and steel companies on the mainland as well as nearly 80% of the mainland’s listed power companies. The group singled out a number of regular violators yesterday, including top state enterprises Sinochem International (600500.SS) and Aluminum Corp of China (ACH.NYSE). However, according to one environmental consultancy, “Investors won’t really care the environmental problems as long as the cost for violating the environmental laws are lower than abiding by them.”
