Foreign telecoms equipment suppliers signed two major GSM expansion contracts in December. A Siemens joint venture in Shanghai won a US$77m order from China Mobile to expand its GSM mobile network in Sichuan province. Installation should be completed by May this year.
Meanwhile Motorola signed two orders with China Mobile worth a combined US$95m. One project involves the expansion of China Mobile’s GSM networks in Beijing and Sichuan. The work should be completed in the third quarter of this year and will increase the operator’s network capacity by 1.5m subscribers. The US-based company will also install equipment to expand China Mobile’s General Packet Radio Service within Beijing’s fourth ring road.
