Gu Kailai's hearing begins Thursday

Gu Kailai’s trial for the alleged murder of British businessman Neil Heywood will commence on Thursday morning at the Hefei Intermediate People’s Court, Financial Times reported. A judge from the court’s press office said that three judges will oversee the trial, which is expected to last three days. It is not clear when the verdict will be released. Testimonies by witnesses were collected in advance by the prosecution, but are unlikely to be heard from during the trial, a lawyer familiar with the case said. Bo Guagua, Kailai’s son, told CNN that he too submitted a statement to the court, as it appears that he was a “motivating factor” for his mother’s alleged crimes. Although Kailai and husband Bo Xilai are also suspected of corruption, analysts say that serving the couple with corruption charges could result in an uproar over dishonesty in other areas of political leadership.
