Guangdong province will extend its unemployment insurance programme to migrant workers in the private sector from October 1, South China Morning Post said. The only migrant workers covered by the current scheme are those in government organisations and state-owned enterprises. Under the new policy, workers who have spent at least one year with an employer will qualify for one month's unemployment benefit, equivalent to 80 per cent of their monthly salary for each year of employment, up to a maximum of 24 months. Beneficiaries who turn down three jobs recommended by government placement agencies will lose their benefits.
