Guangdong looks to nuclear future

Nuclear power could account for 30 per cent of Guangdong province's total power supply by 2015, up from less than 10 per cent today, said a senior industry executive. Zan Yunlong, chairman of Guangdong Nuclear Power Group, said that the province's power capacity could reach 10,000MW by 2015. Nationally, nuclear power accounts for just 1 per cent of the total power supply, compared with a global average of 16 per cent.

The first of four planned 1,000MW generators was inaugurated at the US$3.7bn Lingao nuclear plant in eastern Shenzhen in early July. It is located close to the Daya Bay nuclear plant, which was launched in 1994.
