A prominent official in Guangdong province has been detained by authorities in an apparent crackdown on corruption in the wealthy province, AFP reported. Liu Youjun, the 46-year-old head of Guangdong’s labor and social security bureau is currently being investigated for “serious violations” according to a one-sentence statement posted on a government website Tuesday. Liu has also served as a delegate for the National People’s Congress. Liu is the latest in a string of high-profile arrests of senior government officials in Guangdong, fueling speculation that the Communist Party is undergoing a purge as it prepares for a leadership succession. Guangdong’s status as China’s manufacturing hub and its consequent prosperity makes it a key political battleground.
