A tributary of the Pearl River in southern Guangdong province is heavily polluted with the toxic chemical cadmium following a leak from the Shaoguan Smelting Plant, state media reported. Officials said the cadmium content was 10 times above the safety level in the Gaoqiao section of the Beijiang River. The smelting plant was ordered to shut its drainage pipe on Sunday.
