The city of Guangzhou will spend up to Yn200bn over the next 10-15 years to construct a 500km light rail network, according to a blueprint released by a think-tank under the municipal planning bureau. The network will connect Guangzhou with other cities such as Nanhai, Shunde, Foshan and Jiangmen in the west of the Pearl River Delta and Dongguan in the east. However, it will not connect to Hong Kong or Shenzhen.
Guangzhou mayor Lin Shusen has committed to spending Yn40bn-Yn50bn to build 200-250km of light rail lines over the next five years. He has often stated that Guangzhou will in time replace Hong Kong as the principal commercial and cultural centre in southern China.
