Guilin airport posts passenger, cargo increases

[photopress:guilin_airport_web_1.jpg,full,alignright]Guilin Liangjiang International Airport handled 489,266 passengers in the first quarter of the year, up by 112,621 passengers compared to the same period last year. The airport also handled 3,638 tons of cargo and mail, higher by 1,677 tons.

Aircraft movements reached 4,500 during the same period from 1,109 last year. During the May Day Golden Week from May 1 to 7, Guilin Airport handled 120,646 passengers and 544 tons of cargo and mail.

All of which is very impressive. The airport opened in 1996 and now has a 2,800 meter runway which means it can handle most modern aircraft. Altogether it is currently serving 48 domestic and international air routes to more than 30 domestic cities and eight international cities and regions.

Guilin is, indeed, in the center of one of the most attractive areas of China but China Travel Guide goes a little over the top with:

Lying in the northeast of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Guilin is praised as the pearl of China’s tourist industry. It is commonly known that the landscape of Guilin is supreme under the heavens. The tourist attractions here stand out with their green mountains, crystal waters, unique caves and beautiful stones. It is impossible to visit China without seeing the dreamy scenery of Guilin which are so well-known from Chinese scroll paintings.

All true but, perhaps, a tad gushing.
