Authorities on Hainan island have earmarked US$2.4m for a feasibility study on a 31km bridge or tunnel link to Guangdong province on the mainland, Xinhua reported. Studies on the proposed link across – or under – the Qiongzhou Strait would take five to 10 years to complete, an official was quoted as saying. A new passenger rail ferry service linking Hainan with the western part of Guangdong province opened last January.
