The main body of the Chime-Long International Ocean Resort has started construction on Hengqin Island near Zhuhai and Macau at an initial investment of RMB10 billion(US$1.5 billion). It is expected to become operational in 2013.

Vice-Governor Liu Kun said during the groundbreaking ceremony that the resort project carries a "significant meaning" to the development between Guangdong and Macau. He said he hoped that Zhuhai made Hengqin a symbol of close cooperation between Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau. The ocean resort will become the third holiday destination alongside Hong Kong and Macau and strengthen the tourist position of Zuhai.Macau Daily Times reported that also breaking ground is the Ocean Kingdom project which will offer entertainment, amusement rides, performances, high-tech experiences and animal watching as well as a dolphin-themed hotel with 1,888 luxury guest rooms.
