He Huawu, chief engineer of the Ministry of Railways, told Xinhua that as of September 30, China’s high-speed railway network covered 7,055 kilometers and another 10,000 km of high-speed railway tracks are under construction.
China currently has 377 trains that operate at speeds of up to 380 kilometers per hour.
Capitalvue.com reports that, according to the railway official’s estimates, total track coverage of China’s high-speed railway system will hit 50,000 km in the next few years and will connect all cities with populations over 500,000.
China already has more high-speed rail than the rest of the world put together. And if the railway ministry’s forecasts are correct, that situation is unlikely to change much in the next few decades.
