HK manufacturers call for minimum wage guidelines

Hong Kong manufacturers are lobbying Guangdong for a mechanism to determine rises in the minimum wage, the South China Morning Post reported. Trade bodies like the Federation of Hong Kong Industries and the Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong are calling for more transparent and predictable pay guidelines, after the province’s minimum wage was raised by 20% in May, exceeding expectations. Stanley Lau, deputy chairman of the federation and a member of Guangdong’s government policy advisory committee, submitted a proposal calling for an annual minimum wage rise of 2% on top of consumer price inflation from 2012. China’s central government is contemplating raising the national minimum wage by an annual average of 20% over the next five years, or to double it by end of the 12th five-year plan in 2015 in order to boost domestic spending and narrow the income gap.
