[photopress:IT_computer_virus.jpg,full,alignright]Viruses infected nearly a million Chinese computers over the National Day holiday when many chose to stay home and surf the internet rather than go out.
The Beijing News reports the computers were infected by three different types of viruses and 118,000 computers crashed on one day alone.
Earlier this year, President Hu Jintao launched a campaign to clean up the country’s web pages in order to help build a ‘harmonious’ society ahead of the 17th Communist Party Congress this month.
What is difficult to imagine is why more computers are not protected by free, virus blocking software.
For example, the computer on which this is being written has Avast! which is updated every morning. It also runs AVG and it has a firewall called Zone Alarm which is also free.
This does not mean to say this triple layer of defenses would stop all Chinese computer viruses. But it would stop most. Including, as shown by test, the world-famous Panda which created havoc earlier this year. It would not be a great feat of programming for these free programs to be modified to zap Chinese viruses. Then users would have to be trained to NOT download tempting goodies offered to them from suss sites.
