China’s homegrown TD-SCDMA 3G technology keeps improving and is doing well in the domestic market. Recent developments are driving production of compatible handsets, widening the subscriber base which, in turn, brings new applications because the numbers make such efforts profitable. Research firm Strategic Analytics Sales says TD-SCDMA mobile phones are projected to grow exponentially this year although actual figures were not revealed. The technology – originally thought of as the underdog in the market – is predicted to achieve handset revenue comparable to that of Apple iPhones in 2009. Global Sources reports that as of June 2010, China had a total of 25.2 million 3G subscribers, 10.46 million of whom use TD-SCDMA. Another 10 million users are expected by the end of this year, about 5 million of which will be adopting the local technology.
