Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam indefinitely delayed a proposed law allowing people to be extradited to mainland China for trial after large-scale protests in the Asian financial hub, reported Reuters.
In one of the most significant climbdowns by the government since Hong Kong was returned to Chinese rule in 1997, Lam said the city’s legislature would stop all work on the bill and the next steps will be decided after consultations with various parties.
The extradition bill, which would cover Hong Kong residents and foreign and Chinese nationals living in or traveling through the city, led to concerns amongst many that it could amongst other things impact on Hong Kong’s status as an international financial center.
