State media reported on a phone exchange between Chinese President Hu Jintao and US President George Bush, the latter stressing US commitment to the one-China policy, the former emphasizing Beijing's commitment to improving Taiwan relations. Citing Chinese Foreign Ministry sources, state media said the two also discussed bilateral trade, Hu saying it benefited both countries even if expanded trade brought inevitable friction. The exchange came ahead of the 16th meeting of the Sino-US Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT) planned for later in the year.
