Hu: China respects Sudan's sovereignty

In a message to Sudanese present Omar al-Beshir, President Hu Jintao said China would continue to support Sudan, AFP reported. "China respects Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and supports its efforts to realise national reconciliation," Hu said, in a statement posted on the website of China’s foreign ministry. China and Sudan established diplomatic relations 50 years ago, but that relationship has been criticized over concerns that Beshir is supporting militias in the country’s Darfur region. Beshir is under investigation by the International Criminal Court over suspicions of genocide. Hu will not visit Sudan on a trip to Africa and the Middle East next week.
