Hu protege named Shenzhen party chief

Beijing named a protege of President Hu Jintao as party secretary in Shenzhen, the South China Morning Post reported. Liu Yupu, who is moving from the post of deputy provincial party secretary of Guangdong province, worked with Hu at the Communist Youth League’s Central Committee for three years in the early- to mid-1980s. Analysts say Liu must deal with three major issues facing the Pearl River Delta boom town: upgrading its electronics industry, attracting new talent and maintaining industrial advantages despite rising costs. Other concerns over Shenzhen’s lack of new land for expansion and poor transport infrastructure have also been voiced.
