Telecommunications equipment manufacturer Huawei Technologies has called on the US government to initiate a formal investigation into its business to clear its name, Reuters reported. Huawei managers say the company is the victim of misperceptions about its relationship with the Chinese government because its founder, Ren Zhengfei, once served in the Chinese military. The US government, specifically the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), has blocked numerous attempts by Huawei to purchase stakes in US companies; Huawei is now being forced to divest from an investment it made in US-based 3Leaf Systems last year. “We’re literally willing to do anything the [US] government might ask to give them visibility,” said Bill Plummer, Huawei’s vice-president for external affairs. The company denies that there are any links between its business and military technology or that it receives any extraordinary financial support from the Chinese government.
