Ren Zhengfei, founder of Chinese telecoms giant Huawei, said that the US arrest warrant for his daughter, who is also the company CFO, was a “politically motivated” action aimed at weakening Huawei’s global status.
“The US likes to sanction others, whenever there’s an issue, they’ll use such combative methods,” said Ren in an interview with the BBC.
Ren went on to describe Washington’s recent efforts to curry international support against the use of Huawei equipment as ineffective “because we are move advanced.”
“There’s no way the US can crush us,” he said. “The world cannot leave us because we are more advanced. Even if they persuade more countries not to use us temporarily, we can always scale things down a bit.”
“If the lights go out in the West, the East will still shine. And if the North goes dark, there is still the South. America doesn’t represent the world. America only represents a portion of the world.”
When pressed on suspected ties to the Chinese government and recent reports of corporate espionage, Ren was less vocal, but did acknowledge that the Communist Party had a committee at Huawei.
