The need for greater speed in communications has companies and countries obsessed by fiber optic. Direct into the computer. But it costs serious money and there is already a massive copper network in pace.
Huawei has announced a new technology that provides 700 Mb/s connections over a copper network. If it works as well as is claimed, it means many countries will have a choice between upgrading to fiber optics at massive expense or using this technology over existing copper networks.
Huawei refers to this as SuperMIMO technology.
It has demonstrated a 700 Mb/s DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) prototype in Hong Kong and this prototype is at least seven times as fast as currently available technology.
TMCNet.com reports SuperMIMO technology uses four twisted pairs to achieve a downstream rate of 700 Mb/s at a distance of 400 meters.
