Hutchison Whampoa Ltd is suing Proctor & Gamble over money the US-
based firm is asking for laundry detergent research and marketing services. The two
companies have operated a joint venture since 1988, with P&G initially owning a 69 percent
stake. In 1997 P&G bought an additional 11 percent stake.
P&G is now seeking US$21 million in payment
from Hutchison Whampoa for research and marketing services related to several laundry
soap products. Hutchison Whampoa filed suit in Hong Kong, claiming that P&G is violating
terms of the 1997 agreement by demanding the payment. P&G has since said it will take
the issue into mediation.
