The Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) said on Friday it had cancelled a meeting that was to be held in Chengdu, Sichuan this week, said the South China Morning Post.
The reason for canceling was not given but US Vice-President Mike Pence said Beijing had refused to grant a visa to the Venezuelan representative designated by opposition leader Juan Guaido.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said the proposed change of the Venezuelan representative by the Washington-based IADB “damaged the atmosphere” of the meeting and “disturbed preparations,” said Reuters.
Geng added that Guaido lacked legitimacy and that Beijing “had difficulty allowing” his representative to attend.
