China banned sales of Italian mozzarella cheese after Italy ordered a recall of the product due to fears that it may contain cancer-causing dioxins, Reuters reported. The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine told importers to stop selling the cheese and to recall products that had already been sold. The agency also banned individuals from bringing the cheese into China either by mail or by hand. It also mandated that all other Italian cheese products must be tested before being allowed to enter the country. Japan and South Korea have also banned imports and Singapore has stopped sales of the product. France also banned Italian mozzarella, only to lift the ban several hours later after discovering that no contaminated cheese had been exported there.
