Japan and the European Union (EU) joined the US in formally complaining to the World Trade Organization (WTO) about China's semiconductor tax, which is partially refunded to mainland semiconductor manufacturers. Analysts said that having Japan and the EU backing is likely to give the US more leverage in its talks with China regarding the semiconductor tax. The formal complaint filed by the US at the WTO claims that the tax cost US exporters US$344 million in 2003.
