Chairman and executive director of Next Media Jimmy Lai announced on Sunday that he would resign from those positions, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing a filing to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Lai had also announced after his arrest during police clearance on Thursday of a main protest site in the city’s Admiralty district that he would step down as publisher of Next Media-owned Apple Daily, Hong Kong’s most vocal pro-democracy paper. Lai was released later that night, and no charges have been made; nor were charges filed after Hong Kong’s anti-graft watchdog raided Lai’s home in August after leaked emails allegedly showed he was a big donor to pro-democracy political groups.
