Thailand, Laos and China have agreed in principle to jointly fund and proceed with the construction of a road that will connect their transportation networks. The highway will mostly be in Lao territory but it is designed to benefit all three countries through the development of tourism and business ties. Survey and design work will begin this year and construction will start in 2003, with completion expected in 2006. Expressway length second only to US More than 3,000km of expressways were opened last year, bringing the national expressway length to 19,000km. China Daily claimed that China now has the world’s second biggest expressway network, although it remains far behind the US with 88,000km of expressways.
In addition, 32,000km of highways were constructed in 2001, bringing the national total to 1.43m kilometres.
