Konica Minolta Holding Co (KMHC) announced on Thursday that it will transfer all of its digital
camera manufacturing operations to China. KMHC said the move was an attempt to boost
its presence in the Chinese digital camera market, in which it currently holds a 5%
stake.
Konica and Minolta finished their merger this month, forming a
company with 11 subsidiaries in China with more than 10,000 employees and sales of
11.36 billion yuan (US$1.37 billion) in 2002.
KMHC is also building its
second factory in Dalian, Liaoning Province, to produce lenses for mobile phones which
will be sold in Japan. The new factory, with an investment of more than 200 million yuan,
will be able to produce about 3 million lenses a year when it starts up later this month.
