President Xi Jinping met with Eric Chu, chairman of Taiwan’s Kuomintang (Nationalist Party) on Monday in the first official trip by a head of said party to the mainland since 2009, The New York Times reported. Xi and Chu emphasized their parties’ adherence to the “1992 Consensus,” which agrees that there is only one China, though both sides differ on their interpretation of what that means. Chu was among the few successful Kuomintang candidates to get re-elected in a recent vote that saw Taiwan’s opposition Democratic Progressive Party and independents take a number of key seats on the island.
