Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo, who received an 11-year prison sentence on December 25, filed his appeal to the Beijing Supreme People’s Court on Monday, the New York Times reported. Convicted for "inciting subversion to state power," Liu was arrested in December 2008 due to his involvement with with the preparation of Charter 08, a document criticizing the Chinese Communist Party’s monopoly on power. Despite domestic and international opposition to Liu’s arrest and conviction, state media declared that China had followed the proper procedures and respected Liu’s rights throughout his trial.
