Luxury and domestic-made cars see sales boost in April

Luxury car makers BMW AG (BMW.FWB) and Daimler AG’s (DAI.NYSE, DAI.FWB) Mercedes-Benz brand stated on Wednesday that car sales in China doubled in April from the previous year, the Wall Street Journal reported. BMW said it sold 12,440 cars in China last month, compared with 5,789 in April 2009, while BMW’s group sales totaled 46,619 vehicles in China in the first four months of the year, up from 22,369 a year earlier. Mercedes-Benz sales also doubled year-on-year in China to 11,300 cars in April and to 35,400 in group sales in China since the beginning of the year. China’s domestic auto makers also saw higher domestic sales, thanks to an improving economy and government auto consumption incentives, state media reported. Statistics from the China Automotive Technology and Research Center showed that sales of domestically made vehicles, excluding exports, reached 1.39 million in April – a 9.8% increase from March and up 40% from a year earlier.
