Macao down in 2009

The average occupancy rate of hotels in Macao for 2009 decreased to 71.6%, according to figures released by the city’s Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

Macao had a lot of empty rooms last year. Despite this, at the end of December 2009, the total number of guest rooms available in the local hotel sector increased by 9.9% from a year earlier to 19,216 rooms.

December, 2009, was slightly  better than the rest of the year being  up 13% year on year, with the majority coming from the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong. In fact about half the guest came from the Mainland.

EnglishNews.cn reports that the average length of stay of hotel guests was 1.5 nights.

The statisics show that the decrease in occupancy rate was partly caused by the increase in the number of rooms being opened. Supply outstripping demand.
