The Civil Aviation Authority of Macau (AACM) has proposed that the central government authorize the SAR be used as a link for both Mainland and international airlines to fly to the mainland and overseas.
If the proposal is approved, Macau could soon be a transit point for international airlines wanting to fly to the Mainland as well as mainland airlines wanting to fly overseas.
Meanwhile, in response to a written interpellation from lawmaker Kwan Tsui Hang, the authority’s chairman said that AACM ‘guarantees’ that the government has been following up on the exclusivity issue in order to further develop the local aviation industry in Macau.
As such, in 2006, the government awarded two exploration contracts for long and medium-haul flights as well as joint-venture contracts for the operation of low cost carriers.
Macau Daily reports that to date, only one airline flies under a sub-concession agreement with the SAR’s flagship airline. Chan said the other two sub-concessionaires failed to comply with its obligations in organizing flight operations. They should now negotiate with Air Macau to be awarded new contracts, which in turn will be subject to government approval.
If it happens it is unlikely it will be in the near future.
