Macau casinos get unexpected boost from Hong Kong protests

A record number of Chinese tourists traveled to Macau during this year’s Golden Week, opting to avoid the demonstrations in Hong Kong, Bloomberg reported. More than 750,000 mainland tourists visited Macau over the holiday, accelerating growth 17% over last year. Meanwhile, Hong Kong’s rise in visitors for the week was only 5.4% as compared to last year’s 16%, and retail chains there have reported a 50% decline in sales. This has provided much needed relief for Macau, which has been experiencing its worst slump in casino revenue in five years.
