Macau overtook Las Vegas in 2006 as the largest gaming market in the
world with US$6.87 billion in gaming revenues, the South China
Morning Post reported. Las Vegas recorded revenues of US$6.69 billion from its 39 major casinos last year, a 10.9% increase over
2005. Macau's 24 casinos posted a 23% revenue increase over 2005.
Although the state of Nevada remains a larger gaming market than Macau,
with US$12.6 billion in revenue, Macau will expand substantially within
the next five years with a 3,000-room Venetian mega-resort opening this summer;
MGM Grand Macau's US$1.1 billion, 600-room casino to debut in the coming year;
the US$513 million, 220-table Crown Macau to open in April and Stanley
Ho's US$307 million Ponte 16 casino hotel, also to be unveiled this year.
