Mainland censors block 'Egypt' searches on micro-blogs

China’s censors have blocked the word "Egypt" from micro-blog searches due to fears that calls for political reform in the north African state could have a knock-on effect on the mainland, Reuters reported. Searches for "Egypt" on micro-blogs ran by portals including Sina.com (SINA.NASDAQ) and Sohu.com (SOHU.NASDAQ) were met with responses saying search results could not be found or could not be displayed in accordance with regulations. Mainland censors regularly intervene in web searches of content deemed by the government as threatening to social stability. Several social networking sites are still blocked in China including Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and YouTube.
