China's trade with Taiwan was expected to have exceeded US$50 billion for 2003, up 25% from 2002.
Since lifting a ban on commercial trade with the mainland 10 years ago, Taiwanese companies have invested more than US$100 billion there.
The island and the mainland still ban most direct travel and shipping with most trade between the two sides going through Hong Kong, Macau or other third points.
Taiwan's exports to Beijing are mostly components and semi-finished goods bound for processing in mainland factories and re-export to the US, Europe and other markets.
