Canada’s ambassador to China has said that Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou, who is awaiting an appeal by US authorities for extradition, will be able to fight her case with a strong hand, the Wall Street Journal reports.
John McCallum’s remarks caused surprise due to his high-ranking position and the ongoing nature of the case.
Speaking at an event near Toronto, McCallum said Meng “has some strong arguments she can make before a judge” if the US continues to seek extradition, as it has promised to do. McCallum cited US political involvement, such as comments by President Trump that he will step in to proceedings if it will help the US and China secure a trade deal.
He also said that Meng has not been charged with breaking any Canadian laws, since Canada does not enforce the same sanctions against Iran as the US.
