Mine deaths show year-on-year rise

Despite crackdowns on dangerous mining practices issued at the beginning of the year, 206 more miners were killed in accidents to December 11 than over the same period in 2004, state media reported. There were a total of 5,491 deaths in 2,939 accidents. Families of all 171 victims of the November coal mining accident at Qitahe in China's northeastern Heilongjiang province will receive a minimum of US$4,691 in compensation, and rescue work continued for a fifth day at a coal mine in Jilin province in northeastern China for six miners trapped since Thursday.
