China’s minister of industry and information, Li Yizhong, has set a target for China Mobile of 100 million TD-SCDMA telephone subscribers in three years, the South China Morning Post reported. China Mobile was also asked to draw up a business plan and budget for the roll-out of the next phase of its TD-SCDMA service. TD-SCDMA is China’s home-grown third-generation (3G) mobile technology, and the minister’s target is seen as an attempt to ensure the technology’s success. Some analysts expect that China Mobile will need to subsidize TD-SCDMA handsets ino roder to reach the 100 million user goal.
