The Ministry of Water Resources has ordered more water to be released from the Xiaolangdi reservoir in an attempt to ease the water crisis in Shandong province. The water flow has been increased from 400 to 1,290 cubic metres per second.
Rainfall in Shandong this year is 85 per cent down on last year, according to China Daily, and officials estimate that the economic losses stand at more than Yn10bn. Local media said that 3.6m people in the province do not have sufficient water and 800,000 are dependent on delivered water.
