Motorola announced that it will transfer its Tianjin microchip fabrication plant to
Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) in exchange for a stake in the
mainland chip manufacturer. Financial terms were not disclosed. Motorola will gain a seat
on SMIC's board as part of the deal, which the company says is part of a long-term
strategic relationship in which SMIC will supply it with semiconductor technology.
Motorola recently announced that it will turn away from semiconductor fabrication and
focus on its mobile phone business.
